Good Night Journal... [06 Feb 2005|03:03am]
[ mood | chipper ]

I've decided this livejournal thing is way overrated. I hate reading about my problems in a public space and think I shouldn't have to. Good luck to future livejournalists.... I'm out.

Driver for Vera [21 Jan 2005|11:06pm]
[ mood | crazy ]

Tonight at Russian club we watched the film "A Driver for Vera." Its by far the best Russian film I've seen since "Burnt by the Sun." All should go out and watch it immediately.

The Gym Dogs last Friday rocked. There was much Auburn suckage too. So an easy win. yay Gym Dogs. Boo Suzanne Yoculan and her illegal activities. Girl needs to get herself an unmarried fiance.

Appearantly I made a significant impression on the faculty at Indiana University this past summer while not attending their summer program. Dr. Byrd told me that he heard from faculty members over break and all were impress by Rachel Whalig and I's skills? Maybe there was another me somewhere.

This post is lame. The End.

Livejournal: a great distraction from Old Church Slavic [19 Jan 2005|01:10am]
[ mood | okay ]

Today in my Pushkin class, I was assalted by my professor who ran her hands through my feathery-soft hair right before I was supposed to recite poems. Russian lit is going to be very interesting this semester. I can barely focus for one hour in Russian, let alone three. Ordering textbooks has been nearly impossible as she wants stuff that can only be bought in Siberia, a frozen land of slow mail delivery and credit card fraud.

Did anyone see Condi today at her senate hearing? Very disturbing to say the least (and I am not talking about the unnatural hair flip on the back of her head, can we say afro-Donna Reid?) She says she is going to get personally involved in the Middle East. Stanford oil princess becomes democracy's prom queen overnight. But does the face of democracy in the middle east really look like a pit bull passing a kidney stone?

Seattle turned out to be pleasant experience.  Kudos to Jen Hoyt for organizing the mass migration of History nerds and hotties.  I met quite a few interesting people at the conference and hope return in a few years.   See pictures BelowCollapse )

Seattle and the Kings of Porn [06 Jan 2005|10:21pm]
[ mood | chipper ]

Seattle is an amazingly beautiful city. However, right now I am freezing my ass off typing in an internet cafe watching the Rocky Horror Picture show and being serenaded by a costumed employee. The conference is going to be great. Lots of Russia, Lots of violence and memory and Lots of hot Historians presenting their goods.

We explored the market and the water front today. Lots of scary fresh meat. The highlight of the morning was my visit to the first Starbucks ever. Excitement. This excitement was only exceeded by the whole cast of an "up and coming" gay porn film staying in my hotel. Titan films is producing a multicultural porn extravaganza with images of the space needle. Gay porn stars everywhere (somewhat creepy). There was Chinese food to be had later and tomorrow looks to be historical. I am going to the latin american historical association's meeting in the space needle, perhaps its will be while its being filmed for the porn. One can only hope. *shudder*

[04 Jan 2005|02:36pm]

This past week exceeded my craziest expectations. I came back to Athens early to escape my collapsing house in Rocky Face (after knocking out a couple walls and rebuilding the interior of the roof, things seem to be ok.... stupid bad builders). I've been getting my preverbial shit together so that this semester will prove less stressful than last.

New Year's Eve was a blast, although I may have made quite a fool of myself at the 40watt. Danny flew in from Chile and Adam, Nick, and Jeanette came into town. I got to play bartender and we had chocolate marini's and kir royale and some random well drinks. By 9:30 we wandered to the Elf Power, Pylon, Krush Girls thing at the 40watt. Elf Power was amazing as was Pylon (although their set was too long for the occassion). There were times during the evening where our group was the only group dancing. um yeah. When Krush Girls came on, we were all pretty exhausted so we danced and left early. We walked home and ordered late night pizza and everyone slept in various places in my apartment.

Sunday was our 9 month anniversary. I am really glad that we are still together and he means a great deal to me. We celebrated with brunch at MiaMadonna and then later that night I made a homemade italian dinner complete with sparkling grape juice. (I am done with the powerful juice for awhile.) I head off to the American Historical Association's annual conference in Seattle tomorrow. I, alas, will be traveling without byelka58 cause evil profs keep her in chains....

I'll take some pictures in seattle... its supposed to snow!

Alas No More Blue Sky [29 Dec 2004|06:28pm]
[ mood | crushed ]

Blue Sky has shut its doors for good. They ran out of money and closed down last week. This is very sad news for me. I have so many memories there... I wish they could have stayed a coffee house and not tried to branch out. Alas Blue Sky Alas.

I got a Cow for Christmas!!! [25 Dec 2004|10:19pm]
[ mood | calm ]

So Christmas was pleasant in Dalton. I increased my russian literature collection two-fold, got a copy of "the return" which I've been really wanting to see, aquired some nifty gadgets including a portable hardrive and recieved some cute sweaters. I think the highlight of my christmas was the gift from my uncle, which was completely unexpected, a dairy cow.

Early Christmas [19 Dec 2004|06:43pm]
[ mood | happy ]

So it did not snow today in Charlotte, but today was a magical day.   Adam, his mom and I exchanged gifts over spiced wine... I unexpectedly racked up.   I, not so secretly, am obsessed with pumpkin and many pumpkin products were found under the tree.   Adam gave me Totoro in celebration of our strangest film viewing experience so far this year.   He also gave me several CD's (as a gag gift) to compliment the diversity of my collection ... see below.   This Christmas season is starting off wonderfully.  Its been really wonderful being with Adam and his family.   I can only hope that Dalton will be as hospitable as Charlotte.

Let it Snow! [18 Dec 2004|09:57am]
[ mood | relaxed ]

Yesterday, Adam and I traveled to North Carolina to spend an early christmas with his mom. Its been lovely so far. I am excited as weather forcasters are calling for snow soon. I am madly in love with snow. Maybe its just the illusion of everything being covered in the purity of a white blanket. Maybe its just the fact that I never had much of it as child and love playing in it still. So let it snow.

I've been reading for pleasure lately, something that I haven't done in an embarassingly long time. I am deeply engrossed in an appropriately titled novel "Snow" by Orhan Pamuk. Its about female political suicide in rural Turkey, a very disturbing topic... closely related to my thesis. However, it's perhaps the most beautiful, human thing I've read in a very long time.

I hope everyone's break is going well.

I can feel it coming on... the impending doom of seasonal illness. My head is begining to swell and my energy levels are dropping... Why does mother nature always attack me? What did I do to her? I mean, dude, I recycle.

The picture of dorian gray
Oscar Wilde: The Portrait of Dorian Gray. You are a
horror novel from the world of dandies, rich
pretty boys, art and aesthetics, and
intellectual debates between ethical people and
decadent pleasure-seekers. You value beauty and
pleasure but realize their dangers, as well.
